Today, there are more distractions than ever keeping us awake at night. Between Netflix binges, Insta scrolling, online shopping, and late-night texting, it’s a wonder we get any sleep at all.
Thankfully, the very technology that has been keeping us up can also deliver some awesome apps to help you get the sleep you need.
Here are our top picks:
Calm is an app designed for meditation and mindfulness to help you manage anxiety, lower your stress level and, most importantly, get to sleep. How does it help you sleep? Bedtime stories. Their philosophy is that we enjoyed them when we were small so why should we give them up as adults? You can choose from many different soothing stories ready by calming voices to help you unwind and let go of whatever to-do list is keeping you awake so you can fall into a deep sleep. Personally, I was very sceptical that this would work before I tried it--now, it’s my go-to.
Breethe, only available from the Apple app store, was selected as the Best New App by Apple in 95 countries. Mindfulness coach Lynne Goldberg and other New York Times bestselling personal growth experts help you to fall asleep using sleep music playlists, nature sounds, guided meditations, bedtime readings and even hypnotherapy.
Rather than focusing mainly on helping you fall asleep at night, Tide also tackles naps and gentle wake-ups. To use the app, you select ‘sleep’ or ‘nap,’ set your wake-up time and then a lullaby of nature sounds helps you drift off. When it’s time to get up, you begin to hear morning sounds like birds chirping along with a mild alarm.
4. Sleep Better
Sleep Better is a comprehensive sleep tracker that allows you to track your sleep cycle. Just set it next to your pillow in bed and it will collect data about your sleep cycle overnight and wake you up at the optimal time with its smart alarm clock feature. You can analyze the data the app collects nightly to learn which daily habits will help you to get a better sleep in the short-term, and then, once you have more data, you can review your long-term stats.
5. Deep Sleep and Relax Hypnosis
Deep Sleep and Relax Hypnosis, by the creators of Mindifi, help you tackle many sleep issues through the use of hypnosis such as nightmares, insomnia, snoring, waking up earlier, falling back to sleep, power naps, stress and more.
